The Battle of Machines - Truck & Tractor Pull PDF Print E-mail

Friday, July 16th, 7:30 PM. Newton County Fairgrounds. That's when and where it happens! Machines and men will meet in head to sled competition to prove their strength at this year's edition of the Newton County Fair Truck and Tractor Pull. Jim Smith and Shane Storey, the pull superintendents, have worked hard with the Hoosier State Tractor Pullers to include as many events as possible for an exciting night of pulling Thanks to the support of AgVenture/D&M Seeds, Emerson-Sondgerath, Donaldson Equipment, Newton County Farmers Mutual Insurance/Grinnell Mutual, Kentland Elevator, Fowler State Bank, and Bayer Crop Science, the Newton County Fair Association increased the prize money to a purse of over $6500 to encourage participation and reward the winners for their time and effort.

Pitting itself against the pullers once again will be the popular Ironsides Pulling Sled team! This crew is well known for its accuracy and reliability which keeps the competition running smoothly!

The pulling track is well-known for its design and ability to provide good pulling conditions. The track can be used even if it rains the day of the pull because the track surface is sealed and only the top 2 inches of clay must be removed to provide a fresh surface below.

All classes are open to any HSTPA or NTPA participant. An entry fee for each tractor or truck per class is charged. Trucks and tractors can be weighed from 4:00 PM until 6:45 PM on the 16th of July.

Make sure you're in the crowd on Tuesday, July 10th at 7:30 to cheer on your favorite pullers. For more information regarding this event, contact Jim Smith, Shane Storey, or the fairgrounds office, (219) 474-5745.

Fun for Kids at the Pun'kin Vine PDF Print E-mail

Monday's Little Miss and Mister Contest kicks off all the fun at the fair for the younger set. It begins at 6:30 P.M on Monday, July 12th, leading off the Queen Pageant. The competition consists of several categories and offers all fairgoers an entertaining and enjoyable program. Last year's winners fulfilled the duties of assisting Miss Newton County Fair at some events well but will relinquish her crown to some lucky young lady at this pageant.

The Pedal Tractor Pull is still a favorite at the fair and the excitement starts Wednesday night! At 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 15th, children of all ages will have a chance to enjoy the competition in this event. Joe Shide and his crew make sure this event works just as its adult counterpart except it's not the horsepower but legpower to the pedals that assures success. Contestants usually range from the ages of 4 to 9 and offer the crowd their best effort to get that sled across the line for a full pull. The sled and tractors are furnished by JL's Aggressor. For the “Kids at Heart”, an Adult Trike Pull will follow the Pedal pull. Mark Reed will once again be producing this event which proved great fun last year. These events offer great competition and plenty of excitement. Don't miss it!

Youngsters have other fun things happening as well. The Domestic Arts Building will be hosting Story Hour on Wednesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and it’s always much more than a story! The FFA building is offering some Free Fun Activities such as Paper Airplane Flying, Frog Jumping, and Watermelon Seed Spitting! These take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, at 4:00 PM.

There is still plenty to do for older kids as well! Starting at 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, each night is a Ride Pass night so they can ride all the Anderson Amusement rides till they drop! The Fair Board is once again offering the Pun'kin Vine Special -- Ride from Monday until Saturday for $30.00! Advanced purchase is required for this offer so contact a Fair Board member for more information!

So you see, there's plenty for kids of all ages at the Newton County Fair! Don't miss out on the fun!!
