Little Miss & Mister Contest The Little Miss and Mister contest allows children between 5 and 8 to compete for the title of Little Miss or Little Mister Newton County. This contest is not a beauty pageant. The children are judged on their personality, spontaneity, interaction with the judges and host, and appearance. This is an excellent way to introduce the stage and public speaking to young children. It is a great way to bring younger children into the activities at the fair. The winners receive a goodie bag, crown/tiara, sash and a ride all week bracelet for the carnival rides. Little Miss and Mister are asked to attend the Miss Newton County pageant to hand our flowers to the contestants, 4-H judging events during the fair to hand out ribbons, and various other events during the fair. Little Miss and Mister are required to have a parent or guardian with them at all times during their fair appearances. There is a mandatory meeting that both the child and one parent need to attend prior to the fair. For questions, call Denise Shedrow 219-816-0163 or e-mail

The Fair Queen Committee has announced plans for their annual pageant on Monday, July 12th at 8:00 PM, following the Little Miss and Mister pageant This year’s pageant, Come Sail Away, will take us to exotic ports of call..
Each contestant will be judged in three categories. The first will be the interview in which the contestant is awarded points based upon her ability to converse, her personality, and her poise. The second category, professional wear, is worth points which are given on the basis of posture, poise and proportions. Stage presence and overall impression are the criteria for the evening gown competition which finishes out the points for the pageant. The pageant is more than just one evening of judging however. Each contestant must attend several mandatory meetings that began with a tea and continued through the contest. There was a make-up party, interview practice, modeling practice, dance practices and the final rehearsal the day of the contest. In other words, these young ladies will be well prepared not only to compete, but also to entertain fairgoers with this program. Amanda Wiseman, last year’s queen, will crown Miss Newton County Fair 2010 who will reign during the activities of this year's fair. The winner of this title will compete at the Indiana State Fair Queen Contest. The Newton County Fair Association and donations provide a scholarship to the winner as well as numerous other prizes. Both the committee and the Fair Board are appreciative of the many businesses that support this contest with sponsorships and prizes. Kala Miller, Queen Pageant superintendent, stated, "Don’t miss the adventure, be in the grandstand at 8:00 PM on Monday, July 12th and cheer on your favorite contestant. Maybe you'll pick the winner!”

The stage area in the Domestic Arts Building on the Newton County Fairgrounds on Monday, July 12th is the scene of the ever-popular "Taste of Newton County" Cake Auction called by local auctioneers. Each exhibitor may offer for sale baked products, including the Grand Champion items in each category. Exhibitors donate the small plates of cookies to be grouped together into assortments, which have previously offered exceptionally good buys for the bidders. 50% of the proceeds of the auction are returned to the exhibitor (donated cookies excluded) and the remaining 50% used for building expenses and improvements. The Domestic Arts building at the Newton County Fairgrounds is the place to be on Monday, July 12th at 5:00 PM. It is your chance to purchase, at quite reasonable prices, some of the best home-baked products in Newton County! |
